“Form is born from constraint”: designing a side table from a single imposed material, sheet metal.

The brief
The exercise explored form through experimentation and an understanding of an imposed material: sheet metal. Handle it to understand it, model it to test it: the model becomes a real design tool, all the way to making the table in the workshop.
Materials and colours
- Sheet steel
- Mustard yellow
- Terracotta red
The design approach
Drawings explore several families of forms (the star, the columns, the cross, the half-circle), then three directions are tested as models. The chosen table plays on folding: grooved legs that cross each other and a wavy top, like a sheet lifting up. In the workshop, the metal is cut, bent and assembled. After several colour trials, mustard yellow and terracotta red are chosen: they recall fired clay and sand and shift the piece from mineral to sun-warmed.
